EPIC Heart
Investigating the risk of coronary heart disease
The EPIC-Heart project is a large, pan-European initiative involving 23 EPIC centers across 10 European countries.
The project's main objective is to investigate the interplay of genetic, biochemical and lifestyle factors on the risk of coronary heart disease, which is a leading cause of death worldwide. The project is based on more than 500,000 individuals who are part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Over 10,000 of these people have now developed heart disease since they joined the study in the 1990's, providing a sufficiently large group of cases to allow reliable investigation of the joint effects of genes, biomarkers and lifestyle on heart disease risk.
