MEDITERRANEAN DIET

On Friday 25th February 2011, in Pollica - Cilento, took place a meeting of the four emblematic communities of the Mediterranean Diet – namely Koroni (Greece), Sorìa (Spain), Chefchaouen (Morocco) and Cilento (Italy) – the first one after the inscription of this common element in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in November 2010 in Nairobi.

The session of work was focused on the role of the emblematic communities for the Mediterranean Diet and it represented an important event for the meeting of representatives of national, ministerial and local institutions of Italy, Greece, Spain and Morocco to discuss some measures of cooperation in the post-inscription period and to decide the next steps to be undertaken in the common path of promotion and enhancing of the Mediterranean Diet.

The outcomes, requests and suggestions of the four emblematic communities raised during this meeting can be resumed as follows:

  1. the drafting and approval of a common Strategic Plan for the promotion and preservation of the Mediterranean Diet and for the enhancement of the role of the four emblematic communities as pilot models for social, cultural and economic development;
  2. the establishment of a Network/Partnership of twin cities between the emblematic communities, which will contribute to the further strengthening of their relations and partnerships;
  3. 1.the launch of a specific common website of the Mediterranean Diet and of the four emblematic communities;
  4. the institution of the "Ambassadors of the Mediterranean Diet" that will be chosen between young people of the four communities that are the natural bearers of particular aspects of the same heritage;
  5. the elaboration of a dictionary of the Mediterranean Diet in the different languages of the involved communities and States, namely in Greek, Spanish, Arabic and Italian (thus forming a sort of common data base in four languages), and of course in the official languages of the Convention, that are English and French;
  6. the naming of a street after the other emblematic communities in each community (i.e. in Pollica there will be Koroni Street, Sorìa Street and Chefchaouen Street and the same will be done in each community);
  7. the celebration of a week of the Mediterranean Diet every year in one of the emblematic communities.

In regard to the implementation of the common Strategic Plan, the emblematic community of Cilento committed itself in developing the Research Centre on the Mediterranean Diet “Angelo Vassallo” and in transforming it in a permanent place for study and reflection on the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. To this end, the Centre will host every year the other three emblematic communities in order to create a laboratory of ideas and operational proposals for the future of the Mediterranean Diet. The outcomes of the meeting resumed above will be discussed in an Intergovernmental Meeting between the delegations of the four States Parties that will be held on 11 April 2011 in Madrid (Spain). As announced by the representative of Greece, the next meeting among the four emblematic communities of the Mediterranean Diet will be held in June 2011 in Koroni (Greece).
